Humble Embroidery Brag

Thirty-ish years ago I purchased my first cross stitch kit at a local craft store.  I couldn’t resist a pattern of twenty adorable penguins in multi-coloured sweaters - regardless of the fact I had never crossed a stitch in my life.  I was a pretty skilled knitter so I figured I could handle anything that involved needles and a pattern.

Cross stitch and I quickly developed a thing.  I loved every part of it - organizing the thread, highlighting completed pattern rows and watching the image appear one stitch at a time.  It was soothing, satisfying and beautiful.

When I first spotted Kiriki's DIY Embroidered Doll Kits I felt much the same as I did the day I met the penguins.  I was smitten with Michelle Galletta’s unique, sweet designs.  I sent my Made Collective partners a photo of Kiriki’s dolls and a few days later we ordered twelve kits.  Now all we needed was someone to embroider a sample doll.  When we couldn’t find an embroiderer (say that three times fast!), I decided to take the plunge and teach myself embroidery.  After all it just involves needles and a pattern!

Kiriki’s DIY Embroidered Doll Kits range in skill levels 1 (easy) to 3 (challenging) so naturally as a beginner with no idea what I was doing, I choose a level 3 kit.  The beaver doll was just too irresistible in his handsome red and black jacket so really I had no choice in the matter!  The kit instructions were spot on and walked this newbie through the pattern like a pro.  Kiriki’s website also has an illustrated zine of each stitch which proved invaluable.

I was pretty pumped about learning a new skill and watching the design come to life.  And I now formally apologize to every person who set foot in my house during this time.  Family and friends were forced to admire my handy work as I gushed, “Isn’t this SO adorable.  Like seriously!  I’m teaching myself to embroider!  And it looks amazing!”

My partners and I decided we wanted Kiriki’s DIY Embroidered Doll Kits as part of our collection not only because they are beautiful and easy to learn but also because Michelle hand screen prints each pattern and uses eco-friendly stuffing.  So much care and thought has gone into every aspect of each design and kit.

If you are looking for a great project to take to the cottage or on vacation this summer, these kits are perfect!  Just remember to pick up an embroidery needle and 6 inch embroidery hoop.  Then let the humble bragging begin!
